Eugene H. clapp

Co-founder, Principal


Gene is one of the founders of Penobscot Investment Management. His extensive industry experience includes managing portfolios for families and institutions for more than 25 years. Prior to forming Penobscot, Gene held financial and management positions at Pfizer, Inc. in Boston and New York.  A member of the 1972 Olympic rowing team, he is still involved with rowing and non-profit organizations in his Boston neighborhood.

Daniel B. Ford III

President, Principal


Dan is the President of Penobscot and also a shareholder and Director. He has been an Investment Advisor and Portfolio Manager for almost 20 years. Prior to joining Penobscot, he founded Rock Harbor Management, a Cape Cod-based investment firm. He lives in York, Maine with his wife and five children.

Ronald Garmey



Prior to joining Penobscot, Ron served as a partner of the law firm of Hutchins and Wheeler and counsel to Nixon Peabody following the merger of the two firms. He was a member of the private clients group focusing on estate and business planning, estate settlement, and estate and trust litigation. In addition, he served as trustee managing family assets and had served as chairman of the firm’s trust investment committee. Ron is continuing his fiduciary management work at Penobscot. He has served as director/trustee of several nonprofit organizations. A resident of the Back Bay, Ron enjoys golf and family activities at his homes in Stockbridge and Vero Beach.

Douglas E. Hart

Co-founder, Principal


Prior to forming Penobscot with Gene Clapp, Doug was a Principal and Portfolio Manager with Marsh & Cunningham, Inc., an investment management firm in Boston. Before joining Marsh & Cunningham, Inc. he was with Kidder Peabody & Co. Doug has run eleven marathons in Boston and San Francisco.

Charles F. "Cap" Kane, Jr.



Cap has four decades of experience advising individual investors and managing their portfolios. Before joining Penobscot, he spent 33 years in the securities industry, serving as a Vice President of Kidder Peabody & Co., and a First Vice President of Tucker Anthony and most recently as the Principal of Charles F. Kane Jr. Investment Counsel. Cap enjoys rowing, running and skiing.

JOHN T. “J.T.” Ligget IV

J.T. joins Penobscot with over 15 years of experience in the Financial Services industry. Prior to joining Penobscot, he worked for Pershing LLC, a subsidiary of The Bank of New York Mellon, where he helped institutional clients develop and grow their investment advisory platforms. J.T. is an active squash player, golfer and runner. He lives in Waban, MA with his wife and two daughters.

Colleen C. Macpherson, CFA

Portfolio Manager


Prior to joining Penobscot, Colleen was a Fixed Income Product Manager at Eaton Vance, a mutual fund company based in Boston. Before joining Eaton Vance, she was with Brown Brothers Harriman. Colleen is a CFA charterholder. She has competitively run several marathons; her most memorable taking place in Clonakilty, Ireland where she was the women’s champion.

Russell A. Peterson

Portfolio Manager


Russ is the newest addition to the Penobscot team. His extensive financial experience includes 25 years of Healthcare financial management. Prior to joining Penobscot, Russ served as President of R.A. Peterson Associates, LLC, a financial advisory firm in York Harbor, Maine. Russ has a strong commitment to community service and has contributed many score years of board service.

Jonathan R. Phillips



Jon has 49 years of experience managing portfolios for individual clients, charitable organizations and multi-generational trusts. He joined Penobscot after 25 years with Fiduciary Trust Company in Boston, where he served as both a Vice President and a member of the company’s Board of Directors. His extensive experience includes many years working with estate planning attorneys throughout New England, as well as numerous positions on local civic and charitable boards. An avid outdoor sportsman, Jon has hunted and fished all over New England and is the author of a book about bird hunting.

Martha Hathaway

Director of Operations & Administration

Martha is responsible for the Operations and Administrative side of the firm. Prior to her current role, she served in senior financial and operational roles at the National Center on Time and Learning and Lotus Development Corporation and oversaw bookkeeping and house management for a private individual. At home, Martha and her family garden organically, raise chickens and keep bees.

Kerry Janas

Prior to her current role, Kerry worked as a Trust Administrator for 15 years. She has over 25 years of experience servicing clients and their families on a wide range of matters including tax and estate planning, investments, life insurance and real estate. In her spare time, Kerry enjoys hiking, biking and traveling with her family.

Christine Keiley

Christine joined Penobscot with over 20 years of experience in the area of Trusts & Estates at Nixon Peabody LLP (formerly Hutchins, Wheeler, & Dittmar).  In her tenure there she assisted in the administration of a scholarship fund, worked on estate and probate documents, and coordinated trust payments.  Christine also has experience in the area of purchase & sale agreements and mortgage documents in both the residential and commercial real estate markets.  In her free time, Chris enjoys the beach and family.

Kristin Nicholson

Senior Compliance & Operations Administrator


Prior to her current role, Kristin worked at Fidelity Investments as a Trust Administrator and, most recently, as a Senior Business Analyst. Her experience includes account and trust administration, client service, financial accounting and business analysis. In her spare time, Kristin enjoys biking, skiing and cooking for her family and friends.
